Kid-friendly Workshop at Saung Parung

On August 30, 2015 SchoolaTourRahmi in cooperation with  SC Johnson, supported by IAKMI (Ikatan Ahli Kesehatan Masyarakat Indonesia/ Association of Public Health Experts) hosted a "Kid-friendly Workshop on Dengue Prevention" at Saung Sastra Jumantik, Parung, West Java

One key objectives of the workshop is to encourage students in whose schools located in in areas with a high prevalence of dengue fever to take more active roles in dengue prevention.

The workshop hosted in "Saung Parung" to give maximum enjoyment of students through all sessions of the workshop. With plenty of books available, continued flow of local snacks and food, as well as mini-olympic swimming pool as part of the playing ground, students (and some of their teachers, too) were enjoying story telling, magic tricks, and in-water games packed with messages related to dengue prevention tips.

Served as resource persons were university students from University of Indonesia (UI) and alumni from Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) who accompanied workshop participants on various activities, like how the best way to take care of discarded water containers such as tires, cans, coconut shells, bottles, etc, as well as how to use Abate to control larvae.

The use of 'sleeping net' was also introduced as part of dengue prevention. The key point for participants to remember is that prevention means preventing people in their family from mosquito bites and reduce mosquito populations. Knowing as many as possible any simple actions that can be done at home to reduce the occurrence of dengue fever, is one among important steps for junior students to have it ingrained in their mind since as early as possible.

Encouraging final touch was celebrated on Friday 11th of September 2015, in Jakarta, outdoor at a nice neat school-yard of SDN 11 Pejaten Timur, a state-owned primary school who was awarded as the best performer in "Jumantik Cilik", a program for junior volunteers in preventing dengue fever. Trophies, cash grants, along with special merit certificates were also awarded to winners of photo competition as well as other creative activities in boosting youth resilience against dengue fever. ***

Million thanks to Husein Habsyi of IAKMI HQ, for his kind encouragement by immediately posting my original report of this memorable event onto his [FB Group]. Really appreciated!

2015's Education Month

The National Education Month was commemorated in May 2015 by many students across Indonesia.

I was fortunate to get a chance to be involved in a couple of the commemoration sessions with KIR (Indonesian Youth Science Club) Jakarta, during which future scientists from some Jakarta's Senior High Schools mengled to share a broad range of ideas. A great seminar on "Healthy Environment" was hosted by Senior High School 54 Jakarta, while a talkshow on the interlinked issues of "Environment & Natural Disaster" was conducted at Senior High School 49 Jakarta.

With the challenges of enviroment getting stronger from time to time, more ideas are needed from youth who are active and have deep concerns about current issues. Therefore, it's great to see more and more private sectors are offering opportunity and supports for young people who deserves to have it. One of the opportunity was coming from Beasiswa Data Print, and Website Data Print check it out, and good luck!

Thanks to Telkomsel  for giving me a little happy surprise. My comment on FB (in Bahasa Indonesia, in sum talking about "how to best use new gadgets for more productive activities") has just been awarded a new HP Nokia XL, in conjunction with the World Bank's Day commemorated by Telkomsel's engagement program early this month.

Anti-graft campaigns

(Published in  The Jakarta Post 10 Feb  2015;  in BAC Magz Malaysia 30 Mar 2015

Anti-corruption campaigns are gainin
g momentum in many countries of Asia. In Pakistan there is the case of Najam Sethi; in the Philippines there is the Sandigan junks graft raps, while in Indonesia the case of the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) vs. the National Police is dominating media coverage.

All this made me think back  to the International Youth Camp (IYC) 2015, hosted by Transparency International Cambodia, during which I was a member of the Indonesian delegation. The camp took place in January 2015 and included 33 young activists from countries in the Asia-Pacific region.
