AMCDRR, High-level Talk about Local-Level Capacity

As Indonesian, I am proud that my country was hosting the 5th Asian Ministerial Conference for Disaster Risk Reduction on 22-25 October 2012, in Yogyakarta.

The theme for the Conference was "Strengthening Local Capacity for Disaster Risk Reduction". Included in the 'local capacity' was, of course, young environmentalists like me and many of you.
The Conference also concluded that the participation of multi-stakeholder is critical to the local capacity for Disaster Risk Reduction.

Attractive to most participants was, I suppose, the "DRR Market Place", sort of 'exhibition' on relief equipments and other disaster related instruments. It was from here participants could get many goodies, books, booklets, catalogs, and flash disks containing informative materials distributed freely. In terms of topics, it seems that "integrating local level DRR and CCA into national development" was attracting much of the attention. Topics that was too technical, apparently got less attention, for example: risk transfer, and the potential of science to cope with future crises. Maybe because the discussions in these topics were too serious (well, to me at least).

Mission with World Bank on Safer Schools

(Sharing ideas with Christoph Pusch from GFDRR World Bank Washington)

After the tsunami hit Aceh in 2004, there are many natural hazards such as floods, landslides, volcanoes and Earthquakes in my country even in Asia Pacific. So, I think people need information as much as water, food, medicine or shelter. Information can save live, livelihoods and resources. Therefore, in addition to caring for the environment, I believe we also need to know about risk

reduction.
